Description Notes

Weston Normal Cell (cadmium / mercury electrochemical standard cell), by Robt. W. Paul, dec. 1910.

Circular brass and ebonite base; two brass terminals; vertical rod supports H-shaped glass cell, each containing a clear liquid (cadmium and mercury sulfate solution) and mercury; cylindrical brass cover held on to rod with brass nut.

Condition: good; complete

WARNING: Cadmium is a poisonous metal (carcinogenic) that is extremely toxic even in low concentrations, and will bioaccumulate in organisms. Mercury is also a poisonous toxin. The cell in this object currently appears intact, but this object should be treated with EXTREME CAUTION. See ‘Hazardous Materials’ section of catalogue entry for further information.
