Description Notes

Augsburg dial, by Nikolaus Rugendas, German, first half 18th century.

Octagonal gilt-brass base with 3 feet. Inset compass with silvered base; 8-point rose with cardinal points marked in Latin; adjustable for magnetic variation, with scale divided 40˚ - 0 - 40˚ twice, numbered by 10˚, subdivided to 2˚. (Switch on base of compass box for adjusting; 28-1-2000). Plumb-bob and gallows missing. Gilt hour ring divided on silvered inner rim 3 - 12, 1 - 9, numbered by 1, subdivided to 30 minutes. (Folding pin gnomon on diametrical bar; 28-1-2000). Silver latitude arc, divided [20˚] - 90˚, numbered by 10˚, subdivided to 2˚.

Condition: fair (silvering worn); incomplete (plumb-bob and gallows missing).
