Description Notes

Augsburg dial, by Nikolaus Rugendas, German, first half 18th century.

Brass and silver dial. Decorated octagonal base on 3 feet. Inset compass with silvered base, 16-point rose, cardinal points marked in Latin, and magnetic variation scale divided 40˚ - 0 - 40˚, numbered by 10˚, subdivided to 2˚, the rose adjustable for variation from beneath the compass box. Silver plumb-bob with pierced and decorated gallows. Hour circle divided on the inner rim 4 - 12, 1 - 8, numbered by 1, subdivided to 15 minutes. Silver plate on base has a cam-operated wing nut beneath to adjust for latitude, with needle and scale divided 25˚ - 65˚, numberd by 5˚, subdivided t o1˚, marked ‘GRADUS POLI’.
Embossed leather-covered card box lined with red and white silk; brass hook fastener.
