Description Notes
Botanical wallchart showing the distribution of spontaneous beechwood in southern England, by M. V. Smith, English, 20th century.
Most of the chart is an outline map of southern England (from Suffolk almost to Devon). Areas of chalk are shaded in green watercolour, and the coasts in blue. London, Salisbury, the New Forest, and various geographical areas are marked.
‘F’ (red) marks beech on sandy soil, ‘f’ (blue) marks beech on chalk, while ‘?’ marks ‘doubtfully native’. The key is at the bottom left, outside the frame of the map.
Scale bar is bottom right, inside the map frame: 225 mm to 50 miles.
Title across top.
Text is black stencilled capitals.
