Description Notes

Box with reinforced brass corners and lock containing:
3 scalpels of varying sizes with ebony handles;
pair of spring forceps;
blow pipe;
hammer with hooked handle;
cartilage knife with detachable ebony handle which fits onto the tenon saw, catlin knife and forms handle for chisel.
All instruments in steel.

All the instruments fit snuggly into cloth protected slots in the box except for the blow pipe which has no slot, and is unnumbered (16-12-1997). There is one empty slot in the lid.

Condition mainly good, the end has broken off one of the scalpel handles and is missing, there is some rust discolouration.

Description
Post-mortem instruments such as scalpels and scissors are more or less the same as their surgical counterparts, but a typical cased set contains a stout saw, a long straight brain knife, a spine wrench and mallet and several tissue hooks.
