Gauging slide rule, boxwood, for the wine and spirit trade, by Frank C. Farmar, English, c. 1905.

Boxwood slide rule with brass bindings.
Obverse is headed ‘gauging’ and upper part of stock has logarithmic scale marked ‘A’ divided 1[0] - 100[0] numbered 1[0], 11, 12 ... 2[0], 25, 3[0] ... 10[0], 11[0], 12[0] ... 20[0], 25[0], 30[0] ... 100[0]. Slide has identical scale marked ‘B’; second log scale marked ‘C’ divided 0.7 - 100 numbered 0.7, 0.8, 0.9, 1, 1.5, 2, 2.5, 3 .. 10, 11, 12 ... 20, 25, 30 ... 100. Lower part of stock carries 3 log scales, first marked ‘D’ and ‘LY Casks’ (lying casks) divided 0.1 - 100; second marked ‘E’ and ‘ST Casks’ (standin casks) divided 1 - 100; third marked ‘F’ and ‘LY ovals’ divided 0.1 - 100.
Reverse is headed ‘reducing’. Upper part of stock has 3 log scales. 2 are for per cent under and over proof (one allowing for bulk contraction, one not allowing) each divided 50 - proof [0] - 30 numbered by 10 subdivided to 1. Third scale marked ‘G’ divided 1[0] - 100[0]. Slide has scale marked ‘H’, identical to ‘G’. Also log scale marked ‘I’ divided 1/- to 40/- (for monetary calculations). Lower part of stock has 3 log scales: ‘J’ is a scale of per cent under and over proof divided 50 - proof [0] - 60 numbered by 10 subdivided to 1; ‘K’ is a scale of discount and profit on sales divided 20% - par [0] - [66%] numbered by 10 subdivided to 1; ‘KK’ is a scale of per cent profit on cost divided [0] - 200 % numbered 10, 20 ... 100, 150, 200.
On one edge is an equal scale marked ‘altimeter’ and ‘M’ divided [0] - 50 numnered by 5 subdivided to 1.
