Description Notes

2 almost identical rectangular boxwood protractors with bevelled edges.
Obverse: degree scale around three edges divided [0] - [180] and [180] - [360], numbered by 10˚, subdivided to 1˚. Fourth edge carries map scale of ‘1 inch to 1 mile in yards’, divided [1000] - 0 - 8000 yards, numbered by 1000, first section subdivided to 100. Central section has two map scales: first ‘scale 1/100000 in yards (1 inch = 1.58 miles)’, divided [1000] - 0 - 13[000] yards, numbered by 1[000], first section subdivided to 100; second ‘scale 1/20000 in yards (3.7 inches = 1 mile)’, divided [1000] - 0 - [2700] yards, numbered by 2[000], subdivided to 1000, first section subdivided to 200.
Reverse: scale of inches along one edge, divided [0] - 6, numbered by 1, subdivided to 1/8. Other long edge has map scale of ‘1/2 inch to mile in thousands of yards’, divided [1000] - 0 - 18[000], numbered by 1[000], first section subdivided to 100 (3007.2 has 10000 marked in full). Centre carries table of displacement for 15 pounder gun, formulae for angle of sight and formula for ‘distribution in minutes for each gun’.

Condition good; complete.
