Description Notes

Boxwood slide rule with inlet brass gauging points.
Face A: upper part of stock has double radius log scale marked ‘A’, divided 1 - 10[0], numbered 1, 2...1[0], 2[0]...10[0]; guaging points marked ‘MB’, ‘A’ (twice). Slide carries double radius log scale marked ‘B’, identical to the previous one. Lower part of stock carries inverted double radius log scale marked ‘MD’ (with two fleurs-de-lys), divided [2.15] - [215], numbered 3, 4...1[0], 2[0]...10[0], 2[00]. Reverse of slide has scale for conversion between inches of barrel diameter and gallons in one inch depth; inch scale divided [12.5] - [24.5], numbered by 1, subdivided to 0.1; gallon scale divided [0.46] - [1.7], numbered by 0.1, subdivided to 0.02.
Face B: upper part of stock has single radius log scale marked ‘D’, divided 1 - 10, numbered by 1; gauging points marked ‘WG’, ‘AG’, ‘MS’ and ‘MR’. Slide carries double radius log scale marked ‘C’, divided 1 - 10[0], numbered 1, 2...1[0], 2[0]...10[0]. Lower part of stock carries two scales: first is double radius log scale marked ‘Seg Ly’, divided [0.2] - 100, numbered 1, 2...10, 20...100; second is double radius log scale marked ‘Seg St’, divided [0.8] - 100, numbered 1, 2...10, 20...100. Reverse of slide has scale for conversion between inches of barrel diameter and gallons in one inch depth; inch scale divided [24] - 36, numbered by 1, subdivided to 0.1; gallon scale divided [1.6] - 3.6, numbered by 0.1, subdivided to 0.02.
Edge A: inch scale divided [0] - 12, numbered by 1, subdivided to 0.1. Scale marked ‘Spheroid’, divided [0] - [7.5], numbered by 1, subdivided to 0.1. Scale marked ‘2d variety’, divided [0] - [6.5], numbered by 1, subdivided to 0.1. Scale marked ‘3d variety’, divided [0] - [5.5], numbered by 1, subdivided to 0.1.
Edge B: decimal foot scale, marked ‘FM’, divided [0] - 100, numbered by 10, subdivided to 1. Inch scale marked ‘IM’, divided [0] - 12, numbered by 1, subdivided to 0.1. Third scale marked ‘FC’ (frustrum of a cone), divided [0] - 6, numbered by 1, subdivided to 0.1 (this is the fourth variety of cask shape).

Condition fair (slight warping and slides very tight); complete.

Description
Developed during the seventeenth century, the modern slide rule is based upon the design by William Oughtred (circa 1630).

The slide rule is one of many calculation devices that is based on the logarithmic scale, a calculation method invented in 1614 by John Napier.

Although there are many different types of slide rule and many complicated calculations that can be performed on them, the most common usage involves moving two opposing identical scales so that the required sum is shown, with the answer displayed on the scale.
