Description Notes
Boxwood 12-inch Leadbetter type gauging rule.
Face A: upper stock has log scale divided 1 - 3[.]2, numbered by 0.1, with brass studs marking gauge point ‘G’. Slide has single radius log scale marked ‘C’, divided 1 - [9.5]. Lower part of stock has continuation of scale from upper stock, marked ‘D’, divided 3[.2] - 10, numbered by 0.5, with gauge points marked ‘MS’ and ‘MB’. On reverse of slide inch scale divided [0] - [12], numbered by 1, subdivided to 0.1; also scale marked ‘sphd’ (spheroid) divided [0] - [7.5], numbered by 1, subdivided to 0.1; also scale marked ‘ 2variety’, divided [0] - [6.5], numbered by 1, subdivided to 0.1.
Face B: upper part of stock has single radius log scale marked ‘A’, divided 1 - 10, numbered 1,, 1[.]1... 2, [2.5]...10, with brass studs marking gauge points ‘B’ and ‘G’. Slide has identical scale, marked ‘C’. Lower part of stock has inverted single radius log scale marked ‘MD’ and divided [2.25] - [22]. Reverse of slide has tables of factors for use in gauging.
Edge A: upper part of stock has log scale for ullaging marked ‘Segt. St’ (segment standing), divided [0.8] - 8, numbered by 1. Slide has single radius log scale marked ‘B’, divided 1 - [9.5]. Lower part of stock has continuation of scale from upper part of stock, divided 8 - 100, numbered 8, 9, 10, 15, 20...100.
Edge B: upper part of stock has scale marked ‘segt. ly.’ (segment lying), divided [0.3] - 4, numbered by 0.5. Slide has single radius log scale marked ‘B’, divided 1 - 10. Lower part of stock continues scale from upper part, divided 4 - 100, numbered 4, 5...10, 15...100.
Condition fair; complete.
