Astrolabe by Watson & Sons, English, 1925.

Paper and celluloid astrolabe mounted on aluminium with plastic ring, designed by C. F. Jenkin and produced as a teaching aid by Watson & Sons, Ltd. One celluloid plate/rete and rule with one sight (missing one), no alidade. Assumedly to be used in partnership with Jenkin’s booklet, The Astrolabe: Its Construction and Use - Arranged for use in conjunction with the Oxford Astrolabe designed after the ancient instruments in the Lewis Evans Collection in the Old Ashmolean Building, Oxford, written by Jenkin.

Good condition, paper is discoloured, one weight(sight?) is missing from rule, which is not fixed well at centre.

Condition: Good/fair.

Description
This purpose-built astrolabe was designed by Charles Frewen Jenkin and mass-produced by W. Watson & Sons in 1925. Made of metal, paper and plastic, this astrolabe was one of the first to make use of modern materials to improve the practical use of the astrolabe, making this an effective educational tool.
