Description Notes
Compound microscope; by J. D. Hoop; [Dutch?] 1769.
Square box base with 4 knob feet; stained with gold painted edging; circular brass base sits on top of box; brass stand mounted on lignum vitae base carries circular stage shaped stage plate; long screw focus; 2 arms, one jointed and riveted to the stage and carry frog plate and fitting for stage condenser; substage swinging mirror mounted on separate brass pillar with signature.
2 [horn] pillars arch either side of stage carry the body - brass objective in push fit snout with external screw thread [for lieberkuhn]; eye lens; lignum vitae mount; field lens.

Description
R.S. Whipple had a particular interest in the history of optical instruments, especially microscopes. Over the course of his life Whipple would acquire more than two hundred examples—nearly 20% of the objects in his collection. This is one of them, purchased by Whipple in London in 1927.
