Compound microscope; circa 1868. James Clerk Maxwell’s microscope for surface-tension experiments.

Brass base with 3 levelling screws; 4 columns to a flange which supports the body; knurled brass focussing screw to rack on draw tube; edge of rack graduated 1-18 by 1 where each division is 0.5cm to 0.5mm. Screw fit eye piece with index pointer; slot in the top of the draw tube, opposite right angle tube with hinged mirror at end. Single bi-convex lens, one lens missing.
