Description Notes
Compendium with thermometer, sundial and compass, C. Essex & Co, mid-19th century.
Turned ivory case with screw-fit lid. In the case a mercury-in-glass thermometer bent to fit a circular scale divided 10˚F - [118˚]F, numbered by 10˚F, divided to 2˚. Scale marked ‘F’, ‘T’, ‘S.H’, B.H’, and ‘F.H’. Horizontal dial (in detachable ivory case; 1-2-2000) set on a compass card plate with hour scale divided IIII - XII, I - VIII, numbered by I, divided to 15 minutes. 16-point compass rose, 8 marked by initial. Engraved paper dial.
Condition: fair (parts loose); complete.
