Description Notes

Simple microscope, replica Musschenbroek type, [made by John Mayall], c. 1886.

Brass; hollow stem with black painted handle to rod passing through step; hinge to a brass plate over the stem to a square aperture through which the stem passes; screws with wing nuts pass through the square and act against the stem and two [steel] springs for fine motion adjustment; ‘u’ shaped ‘hook’ to ebony mount for brass objective plate with four apertures (no lenses extant) shoe fitting.

Description
This microscope is a 19th century copy of Musschenbroek’s instrument, made in Leiden, Holland in 1700. The small lenses are held in square brass plates that are interchangeable.
