Simple theodolite, by Huguet, early 18th Century.
Brass circle graduated 0 - 90 - 0˚ twice, clockwise and anticlockwise. Outer scale of a geometric square divided 0 - 50 - 0˚ 4 times. Read by pointer on rotating alidade. Fixed slit sights at 0˚. Alidade and compass rotate in the centre of the circle. Slit sights. Compass rose, 16 point calibrated 0 - 90 - 0˚ twice. Projecting plate from circle, signed and decorated with engraved foliage. 2 rivet holes through plate.

Description
This simple theodolite allows angles to be measured in relation to the fixed sights on the ruler. It has no fitting to secure it on a tripod and was probably used on a plane table to plot angles directly onto the chart being drawn.
