Description
Georg Johann Klinger (1764–1806) was an art dealer and engraver in Nuremberg, who published globes of various sizes but seems to have specialised in very small examples like this one. Like pocket globes, miniature globes served mainly for the education and amusement of young ladies and gentlemen. Joseph Moxon (1627–1691), who wrote The English Globe in 1679, introduced pocket globes to England in the mid seventeenth century. Although their popularity peaked in the eighteenth century, when they were mainly purchased as ornate toys for the amusement of the upper classes, makers continued to produce them into the nineteenth century. This item is from the original collection of Robert Stewart Whipple.
