Description Notes

(Irregular) Octagonal brass base plate set on 3 levelling screws with 2 bubble levels (at right angles) mounted along the sides. Inset compass with 8 points marked; degree scale divided [0] - 360˚, numbered by 10˚, divided to 1˚; marked for magnetic variation at 10˚W of N (20˚W of North (?); 2-2-2000); lever to arrest needle, operated from outside compass. Hinged hour circle segment divided IIII - XII, I - VIII, numbered by I, divided to 15 minutes; also divided on inner rim 4 - 12, 1 - 8, numbered by 1, divided to 15 minutes. (Folding pin gnomon on diametrical bar; 2-2-2000). Folding latitude arc (silvered?) divided 0 - [75˚], numbered by 10˚, divided to 1˚. List of 12 towns and latitudes on plate, including New York, Boston, Verra-Cruze and Alger.
Fitted octagonal case lined with red velvet (?) and covered with black paper.

Condition: good; complete.
