Description
This apparatus was made as a demonstration piece, of the kind which first became popular in the eighteenth century for teaching and public lecturing.
William and Samuel Jones were noted makers of scientific instruments between 1791 and 1859. They enjoyed a particularly strong reputation for demonstrational models such as this. In 1795, they took over the business of the instrument maker George Adams. A pulley frame similar to this one was illustrated in George Adams' Lectures on natural and experimental philosophy (London, 1974).
