Description
This tin pattern for a marching compass was designed by Captain G. Marchant of the 29th Lancers. The compass is a very old instrument dating back to the Han Dynasty in China. It was used for divination as well as navigation. Between 1100 and 1200 CE, the compass was introduced to Europe, and it remains a regular navigational tool.
