Description Notes

Quartz spectrograph. Slit with steel jaws, width adjustable by micrometer screw, drumhead divided 0-100 by 1; sliding height adjustment with linear scale of 18mm; pivotted shutter flap; on draw tube. Brass collimator with ring focus adjustment, divided 0-60. Prism, telescope and camera all in polished woodenhousing. Flap reveals quartz prism on stage with 3 securing screws, telescope. Mount for photographic plate pivotted centrally, with clamp and bellows. Plate has vertical motion by rack and pinion, vertical steel scale, 10cms, clamp by knurled screw. Plate retained by 2 brass arms. The whole on cast mount with 3 feet.

Description
Spectrographs are used to take photographic images of wave spectra. Light radiation from the substance under study is passed through a prism, causing it to split into its component frequencies. The resulting spectrum is then projected onto a photographic plate and recorded. Analysis of the spectrum can help in the identification of the constituent materials in the substance under investigation.
