Description Notes
Katharometer block and control box; one of the first batch made by Prof. G.A. Shakespear at Birmingham University in 1916. The katharometer block is a cylindrical metal block with a screw thread and mounted in a plastic base which has three terminals marked in ink as B, Ka, Kb. In the base of the metal block are four chambers, two are sealed with a wire from each leading to one of the terminals Ka and Kb. A wire from terminal B is screwed to the body of the block. at the top of the block are diffusion holes. The control box consists of a plastic (?) lid with the terminals etc. set into a wooden box (not screwed in place). There is a copper wire with a movable metal contact and three terminals labelled in in “Ka AND GALV’, ‘Battery 2 volt only’, ‘Kb AND GALV’. Underneath the lid there are three coils of fine wire connecting one end of wire with terminal Kb, the other end with Ka (broken) and battery to the contact.
