Description Notes

Broadside and engraving of improved rectilinear (Regiomontanus) dial. circa 1734. Single leaf, uncut with deckel edge still extant. With letterpress and engraved print. Letter press instructions and extract from the Register of the Academy 7 Feb. 1734. The engraving shows a Regiomontanus dial with a calibrated quadrant set on a trammel like arms in place of the articulated index arm. Has been framed. Title of engraving as in above inscription. Letterpress title is slightly different “INSTRUMENT UNIVERSEL QUI SERT A CONNOITRE LA HAUTEUR DE SOLEIL DANS / l’instant qu’il marque l’heure, invente par M. LE CARLIER, approve par l’Academie Royale des Sciences” . The foot of text has the following inscription. “La Description & l’Estampe de cet Instrument sont partie du Receuil des machines approvees par l’Academie, vol. 6e. page 187. & Suiv. No. 427. Annee 1734. Ce Receuil imprime en 1735, se trouve a Paris chez. G. Martin, / COIGNARD Fils, & GUERIN l’aine, Libraries, rue S. Jacques.”
