Description Notes

Spectrograph, by Troughton & Simms, English, 1892.

Astronomical grating spectrograph in brass, partially painted in grey. Collimator with double slit, steel jaws composed of a number of individually adjustable steel rods; collimator tube carries various focusing screws, etc. Cylindrical casing for grating, rotated by worm and wheel with releasing level; other side carries housing for reading microscope and arc divided 0 - 60˚, numbered by 1˚, subdivided to 10´, with vernier reading to 5´´. Hinged opening, with catch, in casing reveals grating mount, retractable by releasing a spring. Brass grating mount with reflecting grating, two folding covers moved by a knurled screw. Second tube with camera, plate holder missing. Camera rotates and inclination of plate adjustable, fixed by 2 clamps; scale divided [4˚] - 0 - [58˚], numbered by 5˚, subdivided to 30´. Two sections of cast brass ring, bolted together, provide mount for whole instrument. No stand.

Condition good; incomplete.
