Indian pattern clinometer, by P.T.I.C. Ltd., c. 1915.

Brass and steel. Folding pinhole and window sights; window sight graduated (23) - 0 - 20˚ by 5 to 20’ and (.42) - 0 - .36 by .02. Index wire adjusted by rack and pinion with knurled screw: bubble in horizontal beam, hinged to base and adjusted by brass knurled screw.
Fitted leather case.

Description
A clinometer is an instrument for measuring vertical angles or slopes. This Indian Pattern clinometer is used with a prismatic compass for rapid surveys. The sides of the flat vane are graduated in degrees above and below the horizontal. The observer sights through the pinhole, moving the adjustable viewer on the vane to line up with the desired feature, then reading off its elevation or depression. The reverse of the vane carries a scale of tangents.
