Description Notes

Abbe’s apertometer, by Zeiss, 1/4 20th C.

Semicircular piece of glass set on white metal semicircle; groove in metal plate around glass in which two indices can move. Two scales on glass, one divided 1.4 - 0 - 1.4, numbered by 0.2, subdivided to 0.05; the other divided 80 - 0 - 80, numbered by 10, subdivided to 5. Magnifying system set in brass body and housed in brass case with screw top.
Fitted mahogany box with white metal hinges and brass hook fasteners; partially lined with mulberry velvet.
Contains card of Mr. Arthur Hutchinson of Pembroke College.

Condition good; complete.

The Abbe's Apertometer was an apparatus for determining the numerical and angular aperture of microscope objectives. It was designed by Abbe in 1876.
