Description Notes

Nautical hemisphere, Etienne Lenoir, French, c. 1800.

Calculating instrument made in brass. The circular plate has a fixed scale of “Hauteur de la Lune” on a raised semicircular limb, and hinged at the ends of this semicircle is another one with “Hauteur du Soleil”. Moving within the latter is a second hinged semicircle with a scale of “Distances”, carried on a diametric bar with a friction-tight pointer registering on a repeating 10-0-10 degree scale covering the semicircular remainder of the base plate. The 2 hinged semicircles are bevelled so that their intersection can be measured precisely.

Condition: good; complete.
