Description Notes
Brass. Compass. 8 point silvered rose. Raised ring graduated 0-360˚ in single degrees. Steel needle; locking bar. Compass base extended at opposite sides to form supports for slit and window sights. Bubble mounted across arm. Clamped socket for attachment to tripod.
Vertical semi-circle; mounted on arms screwed to compass base. Limb graduated 90-0-90 to 30’. ‘Perpendicular’ 6-0-6 to 1 and ‘base’ 0-6-0 to 1. Read by indicator on frame support. Bubble mounted on frame. Pin hole and window sights on back of semicircle diameter.

Description
The characteristic of mine surveying is the frequent need to plot almost vertical angles. This dial, made by Cary, is a standard surveyor’s compass, to which a graduated vertical arc with pinhole sights has been added.
