Description Notes

Cruikshank’s phrenological illustrations 1827. 6 Plates coloured. Disbound. Published by Goerge Cruikshank. Sold by J. Robbins and Co. Ivy Lane, Paternoster Row; S. knights, Sweetings Alley, Royal Exchange; and G. Humphrey, 24 St James Street.

The frontispeice has a comical illustration of a trio of men, their heads divided into phrenological regions. The text accompanying the colour plates concerns itself with Gall and Spurzheims phrenological characteristics. Its tone is between flippant and sarcastic and the images in the plates accompanying the text are literal translations of the characteristic rather than visual representations of the shape, size and protrusions of the head.
