Description Notes

Botanical teaching model, Stachys (woundwort), by Hagenbeek Wageningen, Netherlands (or Brendel of Germany. See notes below) from the 19th century. Made of wood and papier mâche.

Wooden base painted black. In the centre of the base is a blue label with Latin classifications, English, French, German and Italian translations. Below the blue label is a small metal plate fastened in to the wooden base with two nails. On the plate in capital letters is “HAGENBEEK / WAGENINGEN”. The base is turned with a turned wooden column to support the plant. A support rod in painted wood leads up to the plant, halfway up this rod is a paper label with the number “112” in black handwritten ink.

The rod is fixed in to a stem section with holes at both ends (perhaps for attaching further plant anatomy). There are two leaves and one flower. The flower can be removed from the model although this has no teaching benefits.

Condition good.
