Description Notes

botanical teaching model made of wood and papier mâche by Hagenbeek Wageningen (or Brendel of Berlin) from the 19th century.

Wooden base painted black. In the centre of the base is a blue label with Latin classifications, English, French, German and Italian translations. Below the blue label is a paper label with a blue border inside of which is black handwritten type “357”. The base is turned with a turned wooden column to support the plant. The stem is of wood and half way up the stem is a paper label with the number “28” in black handwritten ink.

The stem has a hole into which the flower parts slot. The flower disassembles into two pieces giving a vertical cross section. One of the petals is detachable, a metal prong holds it in position. The petals are constructed using a curved metal rod covered with paper and then a thin layer of plaster before being painted.
