Description Notes

Diagrams depicting the flower of the orchid Cyprypedium insigna.
Five diagrams, all drawn in colour.
On the far right diagram, one structure is labelled “S” (Stigma column), one “s” (staminodium) and one “a” (anther).
The top centre diagram shows two anthers – a diagnostic feature of this genus.
The lower left diagram shows a cross section of the fertile ovary.
Inscriptions run across the top and the bottom of the chart.
Reference numbers in the bottom left and bottom right corners. (Previous PS ref. was U4).
NB: ‘Staminodium’ is an older term for a staminode, an infertile stamen.
