Description
Ami Boué (16th March, 1794 - 21st November, 1881)
Born in Hamburg, Germany, orphaned aged 11 and raised by relatives in France and Switzerland, Boué eventually emigrated to Scotland to study medicine at the University of Edinburgh. It was there that he was influenced by Robert Jameson and his interests turned towards botany and especially geology.
He studied the volcanic rocks in Scotland and the Hebrides and after receiving his MD in 1817, he travelled around Germany, Austria and southern Europe becoming one of the pioneers in geological research.
Boué was one of the founders of the Société Géologique de France in 1830 and was its president in 1835. He finally settled in Vienna in 1841 and became naturalized as an Austrian.
His most notable works include Essai géologique sur l’Ecosse (1820), Essai de carte géologique du globe terrestre (1845) and important papers on the geology of the Balkan States (1859-1870).
