Description
Thomas Martyn (1735-1825) succeeded his father, John, to become professor of botany at Cambridge University. He was one of the earliest exponents of Linnaean classification and the author of Flora rustica (1792-1794).

His translated version (1785) of Rousseau’s Letters on the Elements of Botany, Addressed to a Lady ran over eight editions and proved to be a very popular and influential work on botany.

He is most noted, however, for his work with Philip Miller. He collaborated with Miller to lay out the botanical garden at Cambridge, and after Miller’s death, Martyn spent 22 years updating Miller’s Garden Dictionary which was a highly influential text in Europe and America for over a century.
