Description
William Kirby was born at Witnesham, Suffolk, on 19th September 1759 and graduated from Caius College, Cambridge, in 1781.

He became rector of Barham and became thoroughly absorbed in his hobby of entomology. His Monographia Apum AngUae (1802), being the first work of its kind, brought him into notice with the leading entomologists of his own and foreign countries. As a result, he became friendly with William Spence and together they wrote An Introduction to Entomology which proved to be a very popular scientific book.

Kirby died on 4th July 1850, and His Life by the Rev. John Freeman, published in 1852, contains a list of his works.
