Description Notes
Model of a cross-section of a tree by Emile Deyrolle, Paris, France. Early 20th century. Model is made of painted plaster (gesso) and card, and shows a cross-section of a tree trunk. Approximately a quarter of the circular tree ring is shown in the model. Base is painted black.
Successive layers of the tree interior are shown, using various colours, including brown for the bark and white for the central pith. The different textures and sizes of the cell structures are also represented on the model. Each layer is cut away from the previous one. A few individual cells in the yellow (cortex?) section have painted detail.
An Emile Deyrolle manufacturers stamp is imprinted into plaster of the bark layer. Has original rectangular label on reverse with text in German (?), some obscured with blue marks. Another small label on reverse inscribed ‘451’ in blue pen, possibly original, with perforated edges, as on a stamp. Object also has two modern labels on the reverse, one reads ‘13p(?) 30628 3’. The other is partially removed and reads ‘...-9600-0...4’.
Condition good; some slight chipping to gesso in various places, including the top of the ‘bark’ section.

Made by Emile Deyrolle. French, early 20th century
This painted plaster model is of a cross-section taken through a tree trunk. French naturalist Emile Deyrolle produced plaster specimens and educational models for the teaching of natural history and zoology.
Some of Deyrolle's models of insects are still being used today in teaching at the University of Cambridge.
