Description Notes
Pair of paper orreries (orrery / planetarium), showing geocentric and heliocentric models of the solar system, by Mlle Ginot Desroys, published by Audin, French, c. 1820.
Both orreries appear hand-made, using printed sheets for the calendrical / zodiac scale.
“Planetaire Géocentrique”
6 blue paper volvelles carrying symbols for Moon, Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn. At the centre is the Earth with a crude stereographic projection. 12 strings run from the centre to an outer zodiac scale labelled by house [L’Écrevise for Cancer] , numbered by 5, divided by 1, the houses are hand coloured in alternating yellow, green, pink. Outer calendar scale labelled by month, numbered by 5, divided by day, also hand-coloured in alternating yellow, green, pink.
“Planetaire Héliocentrique”
6 blue paper volvelles carrying images of Sun, Mercury, Venus, Earth and Moon, Mars, Jupiter with 4 satellites, Saturn with 5 satellites. 12 strings run from the centre to an outer zodiac scale labelled by house [L’Écrevise for Cancer] , numbered by 5, divided by 1, the houses are hand coloured in alternating yellow, green, uncoloured.
Condition: good, noting old water damage and slight staining; complete
