ink drawing of a surveyor with MSS annotations; french, 16th century

brown ink drawing of a well dressed surveyor holding rod and cords(?), paperbacked onto vellum. To the right of his head reads ‘SPES MEA DEVS’, to the left ‘Part mon Arismetique / Dieu ma donné Credit / D’Auoir de la practique / Si L’Arpentement dit / [monogram (?)R]’. Parallel to his rod reads ‘ma laitenest de (?)p. er 1/2’, below this are eight geometrical figures. Below his feet reads ‘ A Dieu la lande qui n’est point trop en lande / Mais bien plus tost en terme bien fertil / L’apenteur (?)uiert & bien te Recommende / D’entrentir Ce labeur bien subtil / PB’. Other feint MSS annotations can be seen elsewhere on the front and on the back of the vellum as well.

Condition: fair, worm holed, scruffed edges, worn, one tear to surveryors left leg.
