Description Notes
Anatomical moveable ‘atlases’ of the human body, with accompanying handbooks, Bailliere, Tindall & Cox, late 19th century.
Wooden box with black canvas covering. Front of box folds down (includes key hole with key in) and half of top of box folds back. Inside box are eleven gatefold anatomical ‘atlases’ (all measuring 287mm x 376mm when closed) consisting of two pieces of hinged card, opening up to reveal anatomical diagram on right hand side and key to diagram on the left. The diagram consists of multiple layers of polychrome anatomical cut-out drawings stacked on top of each other, held in place by cotton thread. Each successive layer can be removed to reveal the anatomical features that lie behind those illustrated on the layer above. The diagram layers have numbers labelling anatomical features, the names of which are listed in the key on the left of the gatefold.
Also included in the box are ten small (A5 size) handbooks to accompany each atlas (the handbook for ‘female organs of generation and reproduction’ is missing - not included with the box set when purchased, as indicated in the Christies catalogue). The handbooks are simply printed text on white paper, and have about 20-40 pages.
The box set has been produced by “Bailliere, Tindall & Cox, King William St., Strand” using an English translation of the work of “Professor G.J. Witkowski, M.D.”
The 11 atlases cover the following subject areas:
1. Human body (neck and trunk)
2. The positions of the various organs of voice, speech and taste
3. The positions of the female organs of generation and reproduction
4. The mechanism of vision
5. The mechanism of hearing and mastication
6. The structure and function of the brain, the cerebellum and medulla oblongata
7. The positions of the male organs of generation and reproduction
8. The bones and ligaments of the human body
9. The bones and muscles of the hand
10. The bones and muscles of the foot
11. The progress of gestation
