Description Notes
Six images of harmonic vibrations in a picture frame, made using a harmonograph, by J.E. Austin, F.R.A.S., F.G.S., 1/2 20th century. Recovered from a skip outside the original Cavendish Laboratory at the time that the lab was shut down and moved to West Cambridge site.
Black wooden picture frame with six images in a card mount. The images depict white lines on a black background, the lines having been drawn by a harmonograph (maybe Wh.2033?). At the bottom of the card mount is a small card with the print label “HARMONIC VIBRATIONS. J. E. AUSTIN, F.R.A.S., F.G.S.”
On the paper backing to the picture there is a manuscript inscription “Goodman

Description
Six images of harmonic vibrations, made using a harmonograph, an instrument which uses two or more pendulums to control the movement of a pen relative to a drawing surface and thus produce geometric images, which may be altered by varying the pendulums’ frequency of oscillation.
