Description Notes

Set of three painted metal models showing three different types of plant germination, by A. Fumeo, Italian, c. 1925.

All three models consist of hollow metal bodies painted brown, which represents a cross section of earth, with black bases. Into these bodies slot model components of different types of plant germination, made from steel wire, plaster and wood, held in place by metal pins that fit into holes in the bodies. Each hole and each component is marked with a corresponding number.

[6251.1] - MONOCOTILEDONE

Single component, labelled with a number ‘1’, showing a seed under the earth, plus a tall, straight shoot.

[6251.2] - DICOTILEDONE

Three components, each labelled by number:
2 - Large seed under earth, plus submerged shoot from top of seed that bends down.
3 - Large seed, half submerged, with shoot from top of seed that bends down back into earth.
4 - Straight shoot, with split seed above ground, and two leaves at top of shoot.

[6251.3] - GIMNOSPERME

Four components, each labelled by number:
5 - Large seed, completely submerged, with large shoot emerging sideways from bottom.
6 - Straight shoot, with green section above earth, sprouting five thin leaves that point upwards.
7 - Straight shoot, with green section above earth, sprouting five thin leaves that droop downwards.
8 - Hollow, empty seed husk, sitting on surface of earth.

Description
Display label:

These models provide examples of how different seed types germinate. Germination is the growth of an embryonic plant within a seed, and there are several different ways in which this occurs. Three types of germination are shown here. The models are made from painted metal and plaster.
