Display case containing 10 wax models of the lower jaw of deer, by Hermann Eppler, c. 1930, German. Models show deers’ jaws from 7 months to 10 years old. Made by Lehrmittelwerkstatten Hermann Eppler, Rudolstadt, Germany.
Case contains label which reads:
Modelle zum Bestimmen des Rehalters
Ebonised wooden case with glass front held in place by black tape, containing 10 wax models of deer’s lower jaws, fixed to back of case. They are arranged in two columns of five. They document the development at: 7 Months; 1 Year 2 Months; 2 Years 2 Months; 3 Years 2 Months; 4 Years; 5 Years 2 Months; 6 Years; 7 Years; 8 Years; and 10 Years.
The teeth on all models are marked with think black lines that indicate the number of teeth and also help to illustrate their growth. The second model has different sections of the jaw labelled MIII, MII, MI, PIII, PII, PI. All the models have been painted in detail.
The case has a large paper label pasted onto its reverse side, the title of which is:
Anleltung zum Bestimmen des Zahnalters [Instructions for determining the tooth age]
This sheet contains considerable detail on how to use the models to help determine the age of deer from their teeth.
