Description Notes

‘The New Slipper Bed Pan’, ironstone ceramic bed pan with carrying handle, English, c. 1900.

Glazed, white, one-piece ceramic bed pan, with handle. It is shaped like a slipper, starting with the thin end (blade) that gradually slopes up to the highest point at the other end. There is a large round hole in the top of the pan. There is a small hole in the underside of the pan at the front, to aid the attachment of a “flannel cap”.

On the inside wall of the back of the pan is an inscription which outlines instructions for use and ways of providing user satisfaction:

The
New
Slipper Bed Pan
This slipper should be passed under
the patient in front between the legs
If a flannel cap is made for the
blade fastened by strings under
the handle considerable comfort
will be afforded
BEST ENGLISH IRONSTONE

Description
The slipper bed pan is so called due to shape resembling that of a slipper. They were a standard piece of hospital equipment, designed to be used by bed-bound patients who were unable to make it to the toilet. Slipper bed pans are still used in modern hospitals today, however, the modern examples are generally made of plastic.
