Description Notes

Singing flame apparatus, by Yeates & Son, Irish, late 19th century.

Three-legged base, supporting taller pillar and two shorter spikes. Two metal ‘swings’ hanging from a shelf at the top of the pillar.

Condition good/fair; complete(?). Right-hand wire is possibly a replacement.

Description
This is an instrument used in acoustic demonstrations. Flames produced by a gas jet vibrate chaotically, but when a glass tube is placed around the flame it amplifies vibrations at the tube’s harmonic resonances, causing the flame to “sing”.
