‘Theoria Lunae’, Lunar chart with insets of positions and phases of the moon, by Homann Heirs after Johann Gabriel Doppelmayr, German, c. 1742.

Printed 11 section plate on paper showing theories surrounding lunar motions, phases and positions, published by Homann Heirs of Nürnberg after John Gabriel Doppelmayr’s 1742 work (or revised edition 1748).

Two side plates show ‘motus lunae cycloidalis per dimidium mensis periodoci spatium’. First plate (top left) shows ‘Hypothesis motus lunaris Tychonica’ (the Tychonic system of lunar motion), the second plate (centre top) shows a macula (crater) on the lunar surface, the third plate (top right) shows ‘Hypothesis motus lunaris Horriccio Flamstediana’, the fourth plate shows the process of lunar libration, the fifth plate shows the Newtonian model of lunar orbit, the sixth plate shows the phenomenon of lunar reflection, the seventh plate shows another exposition of lunar libration, the eighth plate shows further macula including the ‘macula platonis’, and the ninth plate ‘De Theoria Tychonica et Horrocciana’.

The paper is watermarked with an angel and elephant.
