Description Notes
Chemistry space-filling molecular model kit, by Leybold, post-1952, German.
Compartmented wooden box containing painted wooden and metal components for modelling molecular forms, by Leynbold, post-1952.
Oak box with two metal fasteners, marked ‘ROYAL BOARD - MADE IN SWEDEN’ on reverse of lid, divided into 22 sections by slats of board and wood. The sections contain various coloured wooden hemispheres, and other three dimensional objects, that can be clipped together (using incorporated metal snap fasteners) to form molecular models. The compartment to the lower left of the box contains various repair items, including spare snap fasteners. The wooden hemispheres are marked with three digit numbers, which appear to be from the original production process.
Also included are two colour-printed paper manuals, outlining how to construct common molecules using the set. The documents are labelled as follows:
‘LEYBOLD

Description
When they purchased Leybold’s firm in 1870, Eli Schmidt and Otto Ladendorff renamed the company "E. Leybold's Nachfolger". This model kit dates from after 1952 and is accompanied by two manuals for the construction of atomic models according to Stuart and Briegleb designs. There are several main types of atomic models in use today. Two of the most common are 'ball and spoke' and 'space-filling' types. Each model type displays different information about molecules. Whilst ball and spoke models are designed to show how the atoms bond together, space-filling models accurately demonstrate the size and shape of the molecule. This model kit uses the ‘space-filling’ type of modelling to represent the structure of organic molecules.
