19-inch “ slate” surface terrestrial globe, by George Philip and Son, Ltd., 20th century.
Sphere made up of two metallic hemispheres. Surface painted with black matt blackboard paint, allowing it to be temporarily marked by chalk. Coastlines are painted white; lines of longitude and latitude are marked into surface. No other cartographical features shown.
Brass axis with leather handles attached at top of globe and string allowing suspension.

Description
The surface of this globe has been painted with black matt blackboard paint, allowing it to be temporarily marked with chalk. Coastlines are painted white; lines of longitude and latitude are marked into the surface. No other cartographical features are shown. George Philip & Sons, the firm that produced this globe, was founding in 1834 in Liverpool and was primarily a publisher of maps and atlases. The establishment of the firm’s London Geological Institute functioned as a production-house for maps and atlases and enabled Philip & Sons to venture into globe manufacturing in 1902.
