Description Notes
3-D cardboard model of the human brain, by J. F. Lehmanns and Dr. Eduard M. W. Weber, German, c. 1966.
Cardboard model of cross-sections of the brain. Includes detailed labelling in Latin of various locations, including ‘Gyrus frontal superior’, precuneus’ as well as nerves such as ‘nervous opticus’. Some parts are illustrated, to give a concept of shape and texture, and some are coloured in yellow or black. Some instructions of how to construct the brain are also visible. Card is pinned to a wooden mount with original iron pushpins and seemingly held together by inserts and 3 paperclips.
Designed by Dr. Eduard M. W. Weber and published by J. F. Lehmanns for students to comprehend spatial relationships between areas of the brain through simultaneous reading and making. The model was sold flat packed in sheets, as part of a book that instructed the reader how to build it:
Eduard M. W. Weber, Modellierbogen für ein Gehirnschnitt-Modell : Ein Hilfsmittel f.d. Studium d. Gehirnanatomie aus gestanzten Teilen.
Our model was acquired pre-built, and was not supplied with the accompanying book. The book+model was first published in 1950 by Urban & Schwarzenberg, but our model appears to have come from the 5th edition, published by J. F. Lehmann in 1966.
Fragile, but in excellent condition. Some rust on the pushpins.
Condition: good/complete.

Description
Dr. Eduard M. W. Weber developed this brain section model as a teaching aid for medical students. The model was accompanied by a guide to construction and use. The first edition was published in 1950, and it has been through a further eight editions since.
In 1979 Springer published the 9th edition of the book+model, in a bilingual edition, which boasted that “generations of students have thoroughly grasped the relative positions of the different brain structures by assembling these picture cutouts”:
Eduard M. W. Weber, Gehirnschnitt-Modell (Brainsection-Model): Mit Ausfuehrlicher Bauanleitung/ Including a Comprehensive Guide to Construction.
This edition was reprinted in 2000, proving that the book+model remains a popular pedagogical tool, a half-century on from its first publication.
