Description Notes
Obstetric Tables Part I and Part II, by George Spratt, (John Churchill: London, 1838)
Third edition of George Spratt’s popular illustrations of midwifery and childbirth. Images hand drawn and coloured by the artist with flaps for accurate anatomical representation, and usually uses multiple overlays (recently revived by Edward William Tuson for his work on myology). Published one year after the second edition, six of the preliminary leaves of part II provide a list of subscribers, attesting to the popularity of the books. Both editions have seven more plates than the first edition.
[adapted from label that accompanied, presumably from Nigel Phillip’s Rare Books]
Dedication in front to Sir Charles Mansfield Clarke, Bart., physician to Queen Victoria. Many of the plates concern the use of forceps.
Condition: Good; complete. Some light damage to covers (originally mauve-coloured), minor spotting and discolouration of the text leaves, including some holes in 10th leaf in Part II.

Description
These Victorian obstetrics teaching books by George Spratt were a popular teaching aid, unusual for the multiple flaps employed by the author to demonstrate various perspectives on a baby in utero and advise readers as to how to assist childbirth in a variety of circumstances. The books are illustrated by the author, Part I revealing the female reproductive organs and the foetus at various stages in pregancy, Part II focussing more on parturition and particularly the use of forceps.
