Description Notes
Horary quadrant, possibly from Henry Sutton’s workshop, English, c. 1670
Brass quadrant, missing plum line. One sighting pinnule is intact. Christie’s catalogue suggest this was made in Henry Sutton’s workshop; it does not have his signature but the “style of engraving and distinctive punched Os and 8s are that of his workshop” and the quadrant was thus perhaps made by John Marke or another apprentice.
One quadrant of the circumference divided [0] - 90˚, numbered by 10˚, subdivided by 1˚. Inset calendar scale divided to month, subdivided by 2o. Transverse arc with signs of the zodiac. Five star positions. Hour lines divided I - VIII, VI - XI, XII subdivided to 30 minutes. Possible monogram, "VS" (?), on right-hand radius, towards the limb.
