Portable potentiometer, Type 44228, by Cambridge Instrument Company, English, c. 1964.
Potentiometer, galvanometer and thermometer housed in a wooden case with leather handle for portability. Black plastic on left of base is battery compartment, does not include batteries. A home-made plastic label on the interior of the lid read ‘MECHS OF MACHS’ and a paper one on the surface of the potentiometer reads ‘LAB SERIAL NO CA 2732’.
Box has 4 plastic feet, and another label with the serial number on the top. Leather handle is worn and beginning to crack, white plastic on interior is slightly dirty and metal clasps and fixtures are slightly tarnished.
Includes documentation, including two photocopies of the ‘Portable Potentiometer Instructions for Use’ type No. 44228. One s headed ‘HEAT LAB’, another has had ‘HEAT LAB’ struck through and ‘MECHANICS LAB’ is written. Also included is ‘Certificate of Test for Instrument No. L.396905’; a pamphlet entitled ‘Thermo-Electric Characteristics to British Specification for Cambridge Thermo-Couples’; a diagram of the circuit and of the potentiometer (for use with the instructions).
